Why I still listen to punk rock

One day I happened to mention to someone that I really enjoy punk rock. What was this person’s response? “Good luck with that.” The first thing I thought to say in return was “Fuck you man!” I didn’t, though, it just wasn’t worth it. I don’t listen to or support many of the ideals of punk rock because it’s popular. I don’t listen to it because it is unpopular.

I listen to punk rock because it means something. The fire of passion in these songs that I scream along with speaks to me. It’s not about thrashing in a mosh pit or starting fights or shouting “Fuck the police!” It’s about life. It’s about wanting something more than the normal, the standard. It’s about feeling that passion about something.

Lots of the bands I listen to are politically fueled. They write and sing their songs for a reason. They’re advocates in their own way and many of them aren’t afraid to join picket lines.

Another reason I like the punk ethic is the DIY attitude. This is something lost in some modern punk rock I think. The pristine recording quality found in modern studios just doesn’t hold the same punch as the gritty, shitty recordings of Misfits or Sex Pistols. Sure, I listen to well-recorded punk rock, but it’s the do it yourself part that speaks to me. Something about accomplishing something with your own two hands is powerful. There’s an energy to be found in crafting your own jacket or shirts. Hell, even spreading bleach on a black tee can mean a lot to me. It’s easy and it’s messy and it’s punk.

It’s about anarchy. While not all punk music is about anarchy and not all artists are anarchists, many of them are. I do what I can to carry a little anarchist tradition with me wherever I go.

So sure, wish me good luck. Tell me some platitude because you think punk rock is dead. I’m still here and the fight isn’t over.

Raise that black flag high in solidarity!

Why am I Pro-Choice?

I found out that the anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision has just passed us. In honor of this I sat down to think about just why I am pro-choice. Here are the reasons I came up with.

I am pro-choice because…

  • I believe children should have the right to be born to parents that want them.
  • I feel women should have the right to control what substances (birth control, penises, and semen all included) go into and out of their bodies as much as is possible.
  • I think men should be protected from people that would use a pregnancy (fake or real) to trap them in a loveless partnership or marriage.
  • I support the idea that homosexual and non-traditional couples and committed groups should be celebrated for wanting to offer a loving home to unwanted children.
  • I am a human being who believes that the battle for equal rights and treatment is not over.
  • I look to the future instead of clinging to a past steeped in unhelpful traditions and stereotypes.
  • I hope for the continued improvement of civil rights and liberties in the world.
  • I feel that pro-life is often just another way of saying anti-choice or pro-prejudice.
  • I believe that people should think about and discuss difficult topics even at inconvenient or socially “inappropriate” times (for example: Easter dinner)
  • I hope that otherwise close-minded individuals will see this post and stop to think about their own beliefs whether they ultimately change their minds or not.
  • I am pro-choice.

Any questions?

New Projects

Currently I am doing everything I can to move on from my old projects.

They are, in my mind, firmly in the past. I still have plans for Torn Up By the Roots, so if you’re a reader, please don’t think I’ve abandoned that project. However, for my own health and general well-being I’ve made the decision to move on.

I am reading a book (new to me) that is captivating my attention. For anyone interested it is Parasite by Mira Grant. It is a very good read thus far. I particularly enjoyed the “Meet the Author” page. It has me considering the purchase of a machete for personal protection.

There are several writing projects I am committed to, so for me it is now a matter of choosing which to focus on. An old friend has a large project for me to work on and I’ve committed to doing that. He happens to be the only person I’ve ever actively collaborated with. As the project is rather large and will take some time, I am trying to pace myself but work hard.

Before I spend too much time with this update I think I’ll get to work on that WIP now.

As always, thanks for reading. May your own reading and writing goals be met in 2016!

P.S. I am now published on inkitt.com (just some poems). Feel free to check things out there as well as on my site here. You can find me under the penname “Lykeios” there, or just click this link: Lykeios at Inkitt

New Beginnings

Because I haven’t written anything for the blog in quite some time I thought I should start.

First, I’d like to apologize to Chuck Wendig. I will change my blog’s title ASAP as I am aware that “PenMonkey” is a registered trademark.

I appreciate that you haven’t, as far as I know, sued me yet. However, it is time to ditch your coattails, good sir.

In any event, in the spirit of the season, I am moving forward. As you well know, readers, it is the end of the year.

So, Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, and Happy new year! (Also, if you celebrate some other holiday as I do, happy Yuletide season! And yes, I do mean that in the generic sense.) Put simply, happy freaking Holidays!

On the Benefits of Being Your Own Doctor

Who is your Doctor?

Think about it. Really think about it before you read further…

OK. Did you think it through?

Yes?

Good.

Now. What is your Doctor’s name?

Don’t answer publically and do not look it up.

Do you know this person’s first name?

If not. Think again.

Do you know Their last name?

Yes? Good, I expect that most people reading this probably know their primary care provider’s first name.

Oh, you didn’t pick your PCP? Try again from the very top, please.

OK, by now I’m guessing at least some of you have remembered (no cheating) your Doctor’s First name.

Have you?

If you have, please, keep reading.

If not, kindly go back to that step and think again.

OK. So, if you’ve gotten this fair I’m going to guess that your memory is not compromised in some way.

If you aren’t sure what “compromised” means in this context I will gladly explain myself.

Compromised – Altered. Impaired. OR banjaxed. (If you aren’t sure what the third one means, please ignore it.)

Alright, you’re doing just fine. Keep going.

Now, if you think I’m a bit crazy at this point, please feel free to let me know.

If not, thank you for reading this far and please continue.

Next step, you know your Doctor’s First and Last name. Great! (If not, you’re still doing just fine, but your memory may be a slightly impaired. That’s OK, but check with your Doctor the next time you see them just to be sure. Remember, they ARE the Doctor you chose.)

If you feel you did not choose your Doctor, please call the medical center or clinic at which you receive your health services. If that is also your Doctor’s Office then great! Their receptionist can tell you over the phone what your Doctor’s full name is and you should not have to make an appointment. If for some reason they will not give you the full name of that Doctor, take caution, that Doctor may have been assigned to you.

What does that mean?

Thank you for asking.

That is just medical jargon for “You did not Choose Your Doctor.”

If your Doctor has been assigned to you by someone else and you aren’t sure who that was. Throw up a mental red flag. Don’t panic yet, but be careful.

Next question. (Again, be careful about posting ANY personal information here or anywhere on the internet. You don’t know me and I don’t know you. It’s the internet, imagine that people are reading what you write even if you’re pretty sure no one does. SOMEONE, is likely reading your words if they are in the Web.)

Where was I?

Ah yes, the next question.

Have you ever been committed to any institution for mental healthcare treatment?

Think about it carefully.

Have you ever spent a stay in hospital of any kind where you personally had to sign paperwork?

Yes?

I’m going the guess that most people still reading this long post have likely been “committed” to some healthcare facility for at least one reason (that is, for mental healthcare or not) at some point in their lives.

Now, if you’ve never had to sign paperwork at an emergency health services center. Your answer to “Have you ever been committed to any Institution…?” should probably change to yes.

If you still say no to that question go back two questions please and reread the one about being committed for mental healthcare treatment.

I’m going to skip ahead here because I’ve probably lost the TL;DR crowd.

If you now know the answers to all of the questions I’ve asked and you feel comfortable sharing small amounts of personally identifying information, by all means, feel free to do so.

IF you do not feel comfortable doing so and you do know all the answers to those questions, please ask yourself this question.

Are you being watched?

Not to make anyone feel paranoid, but you probably are in one way or another.

By “watched” I Do NOT necessarily mean physically.

What I mean is: can anyone see personal information about you on the internet (This DOES include Social Media. That is: Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and any other website even remotely like that.)

Has anyone EVER known your full name?

If not, I’m starting to feel a little concerned for you.

Now, if you DO feel as though you are being watched AND do not feel comfortable sharing at least your First, Last and middle initial here or anywhere on the internet then I’m hypothesizing that you are either getting a little paranoid or have a VERY good reason not to.

IMPORTANT DO NOT SKIP.

If you DO have a VERY GOOD REASON not to post personally identifying information:

PLEASE. DO NOT start sharing it here.

You are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT in your decision not to share your PII publically.

If, on the other hand you’ve decided you are feeling a bit paranoid then try to relax. Maybe take a break and do something that calms you, whatever that is (so long as it is safe for YOU to do).

So, now, I will repeat a question or two and reword some others.

Who is Your Doctor?

Do You KNOW Your Doctor?

What is this person’s FULL NAME?

Did YOU Choose THIS Doctor?

Do YOU like THIS Doctor?

Do YOU TRUST This Doctor?

If ANY of the answers to these questions is NO…

Throw up a red flag and please, see a new doctor when possible.

DO NOT continue to see a Doctor that YOU DO NOT KNOW.

Most especially, DO NOT CONTINUE TO SEE A DOCTOR YOU DO NOT TRUST.

AGAIN, what do I know? I’m just the person behind the keyboard.

Feel free to call me out or correct me if you feel better.

However, IF You Do:

CAVEAT EMPTOR.

Do you want ME to be your doctor?

Now.

PLEASE.

REREAD

this post

and share it.

Thank You.

You’ll Notice some changes around here

Ok, so, you may be noticing some changes to the blog soon if you haven’t already.

  1. I have gone to a “private” setting so I can better mod things on here. (People seem to think I’m a “dbag” and an “ahole.” (My gut response is to say **** you haters, but…well, I’m trying to make money here, lol.)

  2. If you like the changes, let me know.
  3. If you don’t…let me know. *grits teeth*
  4. I have all the things linked. If a link is broken, TELL ME!
  5. If anything at all doesn’t work (a video, a stream, a telekinetically thrown goat, etc. etc. etc.)… LET ME KNOW!
  6. Don’t be a dbag to me or others on here.
  7. I have the final say in who is a douche and who isn’t…MWHAHAHAHA. This isn’t a democracy, this isn’t a “cheerocracy” (as Chuck Wendig put it *wink wink nudge nudge*), this is a Pagan Republic.
  8. All that being said…
  9. HAVE FUN.
  10. BE SAFE.
  11. …VOICE YOUR OPINIONS!

Why Chuck Wendig is one of my Favorite Authors

OK, so Chuck Wendig is in my top 3 fiction writers.

I’m not sure if it’s him or Stephen King in the #1 slot.

If it’s a fantasy slot? Chuck Wendig all the way for his Urban Fantasy novels.

Instructional books? Probably #2 after Stephen King’s

    On Writing

So, here goes my reasons for saying this about Chuck Wendig:

  1. He doesn’t shy away from the dirty things in life. I mean, come on, life isn’t all butterflies and sunshine. Life sucks. Life is a bitch. But, most of all, Life is worth living anyway. Take a tip from Miriam Black in Blackbirds.
  2. He’s unapologetic. Just look at the guy’s blogs! Lol.
  3. He hooks you, drags you under, and then pulls you out (sometimes flopping like a fish) to keep reading when you have enough wind.

There are countless more reasons, but this will be updated often going forward as I read more of his new works.

Thanks for reading.

Have a great day
